Evolution of Land Diving

As mentioned earlier in the article, during the 19th century the Pentecost Islands along with the rest of Vanuatu were converted to Christianity. Though the people of Pentecost have since reclaimed their independance from the British and French, they have remained a Christian culture.

The tradition did disappear for a short time during the 19th century because of the conflicting ideology that it had with the Christian faith; however, in the 1970s, an anti-colonial group fought to restore the old traditions of the people, defending Nahgol, stating that it should be performed, not for its spiritual significance, but as a symbol of the cultural identity of the people.

Now, the land-diving ritual is performed as a ritual. While the people still respect its roots, and even adhere to the idea of its supersticious power, they view it as a preservation of the traditions and cultural identity of their people.
